Make a lighter version of the Outback Steakhouse favorite blooming onion in your air fryer. This recipe includes a guide for cutting the onion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion: Cut off the top 1/2 inch of the onion. Place the onion cut-side down on a cutting board. Make a cut from the top to about 1/2 inch from the root, but do not cut all the way through. Make four evenly spaced cuts around the onion, going from the top to about 1/2 inch from the root. Then, make two more cuts between each of those, for a total of 8 cuts. Gently spread the onion petals apart.
  2. Set up your dredging stations: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). In another shallow bowl, whisk the eggs and milk. Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl.
  3. Coat the onion: Dip the entire onion into the flour mixture, making sure to get it into all the crevices. Shake off any excess.
  4. Dip the onion into the egg mixture, ensuring it is fully coated.
  5. Press the onion into the panko breadcrumbs, again making sure to coat all sides and get the crumbs into the petals.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated onion in the basket, cut-side up.
  8. Spray the top of the onion generously with cooking spray.
  9. Air fry for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to adjust the time based on your air fryer.
  10. Carefully remove the blooming onion from the air fryer and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For best results, use a sweet onion like Vidalia.
  • Ensure the onion is fully coated at each dredging stage for maximum crispiness.
  • Serve with a side of ranch or bloomin’ onion sauce.
