Enjoy the classic taste of apple pie in a convenient, handheld egg roll format. These fried or air-fried treats are filled with a warm cinnamon-apple mixture and are perfect for a fall dessert or fair food at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 egg roll wrappers
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying (if not air frying)
  • Caramel sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook until the apples begin to soften, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and lemon juice to create a slurry.
  4. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the skillet with the apples. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and let the apple filling cool completely.
  5. Lay an egg roll wrapper flat on a clean surface. Place about 2 tablespoons of the cooled apple filling in the center.
  6. Brush the edges of the wrapper with the beaten egg wash.
  7. Fold the bottom edge of the wrapper over the filling, then fold in the sides. Roll tightly to form an egg roll.
  8. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  9. For Frying: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C). Fry the egg rolls in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
  10. For Air Frying: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly brush the egg rolls with oil. Place them in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  11. Serve warm with caramel sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Ensure the apple filling is completely cool before assembling the egg rolls to prevent the wrappers from becoming soggy.
  • For a crispier finish in the air fryer, you can lightly spray or brush the egg rolls with cooking oil before cooking.
  • These egg rolls are best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven for best results.
