- 3–4 pound pork shoulder (Boston butt)
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 bottle (18 ounces) your favorite BBQ sauce
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Salt to taste
- Hamburger buns, for serving
- Place the sliced onion in the bottom of your slow cooker.
- Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder and place it on top of the onions.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
- Pour the BBQ sauce mixture over the pork shoulder.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pork is tender and shreds easily.
- Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or in a large bowl.
- Using two forks, shred the pork.
- Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir to coat with the sauce.
- Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sauce mixture.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can remove the pork and cook the sauce uncovered on the stovetop for a few minutes until reduced.
- This recipe freezes well.
