Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 pound pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 bottle (18 ounces) your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Hamburger buns, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced onion in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  2. Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder and place it on top of the onions.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
  4. Pour the BBQ sauce mixture over the pork shoulder.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pork is tender and shreds easily.
  6. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or in a large bowl.
  7. Using two forks, shred the pork.
  8. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir to coat with the sauce.
  9. Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the sauce mixture.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can remove the pork and cook the sauce uncovered on the stovetop for a few minutes until reduced.
  • This recipe freezes well.
