Ingredients
Scale
4 large baking apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
1 package (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup water
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 cup milk, for brushing
2 tablespoons granulated sugar, for sprinkling
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Prepare the apples: Peel, core, and cut each apple into quarters.
Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into triangles.
Place one apple quarter on the wide end of a dough triangle. Fold the dough over the apple to enclose it, pressing the seams to seal. Repeat with the remaining apple quarters and dough triangles.
Arrange the dough-wrapped apples seam-side down in the prepared baking dish.
Make the sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the butter and sugars are dissolved.
Pour the hot sauce evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender. Baste the dumplings with the sauce halfway through baking.
Remove from oven. Brush the tops of the dumplings with milk and sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar.
Return to the oven for another 5-10 minutes, or until the tops are lightly caramelized.
Let cool slightly before serving. Spoon extra sauce over each dumpling.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
For a richer sauce, you can add a splash of heavy cream at the end of cooking the sauce.
If you don’t have crescent roll dough, you can use pie crust dough, cut into squares large enough to wrap the apple pieces.
