Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, these apple fritters are loaded with apples and cinnamon, then finished with a sweet glaze. They are a perfect fall breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Gently fold in the diced apples.
  5. Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. While the fritters are cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach desired drizzling consistency.
  9. Drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters.

Notes

  • For best results, use apples that hold their shape when cooked, such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala.
  • Ensure your oil is at the correct temperature before frying to prevent greasy fritters.
  • You can add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to the batter for extra flavor.
