Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 cup peeled, cored, and chopped fresh apples
  • For the Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk or apple cider
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a standard muffin tin or line it with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg, milk, and melted butter until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix the batter.
  5. Fold in the chopped fresh apples until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  6. Spoon the batter evenly into the prepared muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full.
  7. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. While the fritters cool slightly, prepare the glaze. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk (or apple cider), and vanilla extract until smooth. Add more liquid, one teaspoon at a time, if the glaze is too thick.
  9. Remove the warm fritters from the tin. Drizzle the cinnamon glaze generously over the tops of the warm baked apple fritters.
  10. Serve warm for the best flavor.

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, use apple cider instead of milk in the batter.
  • If you prefer a tangier glaze, substitute the vanilla extract with 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in the glaze mixture.
  • These fritters are best eaten the day they are made, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
