Create the ultimate crowd-pleasing appetizer with this creamy French Onion Dip recipe. You achieve deep, savory flavor by slowly caramelizing fresh onions before folding them into a rich sour cream and mayonnaise base. This dip is perfect for game day or any party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup sour cream, full fat
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise, full fat
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, minced

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, for 45 to 60 minutes until they are deeply browned, soft, and sweet. This slow caramelization builds the flavor base.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the cooled onions, Worcestershire sauce, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Mix until everything is well incorporated.
  5. Taste the dip and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Stir in the minced fresh chives.
  7. Cover the bowl and chill the onion dip in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to fully meld.
  8. Serve your creamy onion dip cold with potato chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For a quicker version, substitute the caramelized onions with one packet of dry onion soup mix stirred into the sour cream and mayonnaise base.
  • If you prefer a tangier dip, substitute half of the mayonnaise with plain Greek yogurt.
  • This dip tastes best when made a day ahead, allowing the onion flavor to deepen.
