Ingredients
Scale
1 package (8 count) refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/4 cup water
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg until the apples are evenly coated.
Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie dish. Dot the top of the apples with the small pieces of butter. Pour the 1/4 cup of water around the edges of the apples.
Unroll the refrigerated cinnamon rolls. Cut each roll into quarters.
Arrange the quartered cinnamon roll pieces over the top of the apple filling, leaving small gaps between them to allow for spreading. You do not need to cover the entire surface.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbly and the cinnamon roll pieces are golden brown and cooked through.
Remove the pie from the oven. Immediately spread the included cinnamon roll icing over the warm pastry pieces.
Let the pie cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, consider using store-bought apple pie filling instead of fresh apples.
If you want a more structured crust, you can press half the cinnamon roll dough into the bottom of the pie plate before adding the filling.
This dessert pairs well with a glass of chilled white wine for entertaining.
If you are interested in structured eating, this recipe is a good example of a treat you might incorporate into a flexible meal planning approach.
