This recipe creates a moist, flavorful banana bread featuring a rich, tangy cream cheese swirl. It is an approachable yet elegant dessert bread perfect for breakfast or a comforting snack.

  • 3 large overripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the mashed bananas, melted butter, granulated sugar, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and optional cinnamon.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing only until no streaks of flour remain. Do not overmix.
  5. Prepare the cream cheese filling: In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, egg yolk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Pour half of the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. Dollop the cream cheese mixture evenly over the batter.
  8. Pour the remaining banana bread batter over the cream cheese layer.
  9. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the layers together for a marbled effect.
  10. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

  • For a cream cheese cinnamon swirl banana bread, mix 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon into the cream cheese filling mixture.
