Create an impressive brunch centerpiece with this make-ahead croissant breakfast casserole featuring savory ham and melted cheese. Prepare it the night before for an easy, elegant morning bake.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 large croissants, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup diced ham
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange the cut croissant pieces evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  2. Sprinkle the diced ham and both cheeses over the croissants.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissants and fillings in the baking dish. Gently press down on the croissants to help them absorb the liquid.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap.
  7. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown on top, and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use day-old croissants, as they absorb the custard better.
  • You can substitute the ham with cooked, crumbled sausage or bacon for a different savory profile.
  • This dish pairs well with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc for brunch.
