- 1 box vanilla cake mix
- Ingredients for cake mix (eggs, oil, water)
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Black edible marker or candy eyes
- Prepare cupcakes according to cake mix directions. Let cool completely.
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter until creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, beating until smooth and fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Transfer frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip.
- Pipe a large swirl of frosting onto each cupcake to create a ghost shape.
- Use a black edible marker or place candy eyes on the frosting to create ghost faces.
- Store frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Notes
- For stiffer frosting, chill the butter before creaming or add a tablespoon more powdered sugar.
- If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off.
- Make-ahead tip: Bake cupcakes one day in advance and store them unfrosted in an airtight container. Frost them on the day of your event.
