Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix
  • Ingredients for cake mix (eggs, oil, water)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black edible marker or candy eyes

Instructions

  1. Prepare cupcakes according to cake mix directions. Let cool completely.
  2. In a large bowl, beat softened butter until creamy.
  3. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, beating until smooth and fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Transfer frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large round tip.
  5. Pipe a large swirl of frosting onto each cupcake to create a ghost shape.
  6. Use a black edible marker or place candy eyes on the frosting to create ghost faces.
  7. Store frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Notes

  • For stiffer frosting, chill the butter before creaming or add a tablespoon more powdered sugar.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off.
  • Make-ahead tip: Bake cupcakes one day in advance and store them unfrosted in an airtight container. Frost them on the day of your event.
