Create this classic, crowd-pleasing Hanky Panky appetizer. This recipe delivers savory, cheesy sausage mixture served warm on toasted bread, making it a perfect party food idea for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Velveeta cheese
  • 2 loaves thin-sliced pumpernickel or rye bread, crusts removed

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly toast the bread slices until they are firm but not browned. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage and ground beef together. Break the meat apart as it cooks. Drain off all the excess grease completely.
  3. Return the cooked meat to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low.
  4. Add the softened cream cheese, cream of mushroom soup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, pepper, and salt to the meat mixture. Stir until the cream cheese is fully melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  5. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and Velveeta cheese until both are completely melted into the mixture. Keep the heat low to prevent the cheese from breaking.
  6. Spread a generous layer of the meat and cheese mixture onto each toasted bread slice.
  7. Arrange the topped bread slices on a baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the topping is hot and bubbly.
  9. Serve immediately as savory finger foods.

Notes

  • For an easier assembly, you can prepare the meat and cheese mixture up to one day ahead and store it covered in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before spreading onto the bread.
  • If you prefer a slightly tangier flavor, substitute half of the cheddar cheese with Monterey Jack cheese.
  • If you do not have pumpernickel or rye bread, use sturdy crackers or small slices of French bread for the base.
