Create rich, creamy homemade chocolate milk using simple pantry staples like cocoa powder. This easy recipe is better than store-bought mixes and lets you control the sweetness for a satisfying cold chocolate beverage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste for less sugar chocolate milk)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Mix these dry ingredients well to prevent lumps.
  2. Add one tablespoon of milk to the dry mixture and stir vigorously until you form a smooth, thick paste. This step helps the cocoa dissolve completely.
  3. Pour the cocoa paste into a glass or jar. Add the vanilla extract.
  4. Slowly pour in the remaining milk while whisking or stirring constantly until the mixture is fully combined and smooth.
  5. Taste the chocolate milk. Add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter, or a splash more milk if the chocolate flavor is too strong.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a refreshing, quick chocolate drink.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, gently warm about 1/4 cup of the milk first, dissolve the cocoa and sugar in it completely, then mix with the cold milk.
  • This recipe makes one serving but scales up easily for a pitcher of classic chocolate milk.
  • To make a DIY chocolate milk powder mix for later, combine 1 cup cocoa powder, 1 cup sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Store in an airtight container. Use 3 tablespoons of the mix per cup of milk.
