A simple recipe for a velvety, rich, and creamy hot chocolate made from scratch, perfect for a cozy winter day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk (whole milk recommended for creaminess)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: marshmallows, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it is hot but not boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour into a mug and add your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For an extra decadent treat, use half-and-half or a splash of heavy cream instead of some of the milk.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of cayenne pepper for a Mexican-inspired twist.
  • Stir in a chopped piece of dark or milk chocolate for an even richer flavor.
