Create flavorful, authentic chicken street tacos fast. This recipe delivers juicy, seasoned shredded chicken perfect for weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning mix
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 12 small corn tortillas
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 limes, cut into wedges

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken in a slow cooker or a pot on the stove.
  2. Drizzle the chicken with olive oil and sprinkle evenly with the taco seasoning. Add the chicken broth.
  3. If using a slow cooker, cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours until the chicken is tender. If cooking on the stove, simmer covered over medium-low heat for 20-25 minutes, turning once.
  4. Remove the chicken and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the pot and stir to coat it in the remaining liquid.
  5. Warm the corn tortillas according to package directions (a dry skillet works well for a slight char).
  6. Assemble your tacos: fill each warm tortilla with the shredded chicken.
  7. Top each taco with chopped white onion and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately with lime wedges for squeezing over the top.

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, add 1 teaspoon of cumin and 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder to the seasoning mix before cooking.
  • If you prefer a crispier texture, place assembled tacos on a baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 5-7 minutes until the edges are slightly crisp.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings like cotija cheese, salsa verde, or sliced radishes for an authentic street taco experience.
