An easy, flavorful orange chicken recipe made in your slow cooker, perfect for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 cup orange juice (from concentrate is fine)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • Optional: Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place chicken in the slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, orange zest, ginger, and garlic.
  3. Pour the sauce over the chicken in the slow cooker.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours or on high for 2-3 hours, until chicken is cooked through and tender.
  5. Remove chicken from the slow cooker and shred or cut into bite-sized pieces.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and cold water to create a slurry.
  7. Stir the cornstarch slurry into the sauce remaining in the slow cooker.
  8. Turn the slow cooker to high and cook, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  9. Return the chicken to the slow cooker and stir to coat with the thickened sauce.
  10. Serve hot over rice or with steamed broccoli, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, you can add a little more cornstarch slurry.
  • If you prefer a less sweet sauce, reduce the brown sugar.
  • This recipe can be made ahead and reheated.
  • Consider this a healthier alternative to fried orange chicken.
