A comforting and easy-to-make tater tot casserole, perfect for a family weeknight dinner. This recipe features a savory ground meat filling topped with crispy tater tots and melted cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bag (16 ounces) frozen tater tots
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground meat with the chopped onion over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  4. Pour the meat mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  5. Arrange the frozen tater tots evenly over the meat mixture.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  8. Let it stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispy tater tots, ensure they are in a single layer and bake for the full recommended time.
  • You can substitute cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom soup.
  • Add a can of drained green beans to the meat mixture for a classic “hotdish” variation.
  • This casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. Add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
  • To freeze and reheat, assemble the casserole but do not bake. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and then foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, remove foil, and bake as directed, adding extra time as needed.
