Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (thick-cut bread)
  • 4 slices Provolone or Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the beef broth, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Stir well to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let the sloppy joe mixture cook uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the sauce to thicken.
  6. While the meat simmers, prepare the Texas Toast. Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of Texas Toast.
  7. Place the buttered slices, butter-side down, in a clean, large skillet or on a griddle over medium heat. Toast for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and crisp. Remove from heat.
  8. Place one slice of cheese on top of four of the toasted slices. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture over the cheese. Top with the remaining four slices of toast, pressing down lightly.
  9. Serve immediately for a hearty, messy sandwich experience.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use half ground beef and half ground Italian sausage in the filling.
  • If you prefer a tangier sauce, substitute 1 tablespoon of the ketchup with tomato paste and add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  • This recipe makes excellent leftovers; reheat the meat mixture separately and toast fresh bread for serving.
