Create a restaurant-style white pizza sauce at home that is richer and more flavorful than store-bought options. This recipe uses simple ingredients to yield a creamy, garlicky base perfect for any pizza.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  2. Whisk in the flour to create a smooth paste, cooking for 1 minute. This cooks out the raw flour taste.
  3. Slowly pour in the warm milk while continuously whisking to prevent lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens slightly, about 3 minutes.
  4. Stir in the heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Continue to cook, stirring often, until the sauce is smooth and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Remove the sauce from the heat. Use immediately as the base for your white pizza or allow it to cool slightly before spreading onto your dough.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the milk with 1/4 cup of softened cream cheese, whisking it in with the heavy cream.
  • This homemade white pizza sauce stores well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of milk if it thickens too much.
  • Pair this garlic pizza sauce with toppings like spinach, grilled chicken, mushrooms, or caramelized onions for a gourmet white pizza experience.
